After 3 years of running a travel photography account, I am convinced that organic growth is mostly a myth. This is based on the fact that no amount of exposure on a single post generates enough followers to actually build a large following. My best posts, which have generated 30,000 impressions and been reposted 30+ times by much larger accounts, have generated around ~20 followers. That is by far the exception. My normal posts generate no followers and even lose followers. Meanwhile, accounts with objectively lower quality images grow their followings exponentially. It’s not hard to see that Instagram is not a meritocracy. The only thing that has ever actually worked for me is shout-outs from my friends with larger accounts and spam. The vast majority of my followers discovered my account because a robot I set up liked one of their pictures or followed them. Instagram recently made this approach almost impossible or at least very manual. My question is for people who have managed to grow their following to 20k+ and are willing to be honest about how that happened.
