Having Instagram become such a massive platform, I was wondering, how it started out. Some time ago I read that the app was published in the morning and by afternoon had gathered hundreds of thousands of users. 5 second googling didn’t help find this source. I don’t have a good memory about the time when IG started out as I was in my early teens and definitely not thinking much about businesses or marketing. So I found this subreddit, maybe someone here have some memories about how or if IG advertised itself and reached such numbers? How would you even go about making people use a completely new platform? I would guess that at the time there wasn’t much platforms entirely dedicated to photos, Flickr comes to mind, but I believe it couldn’t be used so personally as IG, Facebook of course, but this is more of a multi tool than focused on a niche. So such media platform in the rise of smartphones when camera would be in everyones pocket just got together very well. I have a dilemma I can’t wrap my head around and want some advice. I have a personal Instagram. Let’s call it JonDoe. It goes with my personal twitter/twitch/youtube. On it, I have mixed personal content and brand content as a streamer/youtuber. It’s all growing very well, and I have over 1k on insta, growing daily, but I want to rebrand my JonDoe account to my streamer brand, lets call it SillyGamerStuff and start posting more funny / on-brand content. I figured I’d just start a second account for JonDoe’s personal stuff, for family, friends, girlfriend, etc and run with the momentum on my main account, now named SillyGamerStuff (don’t eff with momentum, right?) My only hangup, is that I would basically lose all my personal history on my JonDoe -> now SillyGamerStuff. “lose” as in, all my personal stuff from before I started this online personality, from about 2 years back, so 5 years or so of history, would be buried under all the brand content.
