Hey Reddit! I took a bit of a social media detox for the last few years after being an avid user for a long time. I make music and am looking to get back onto Instagram and use it as a platform to drive traffic towards YouTube videos. Got the songs finished, got the videos looking good and got an aesthetic that I think will appeal to a certain demographic, but I don’t know how to find/reach those people. Whenever I’ve posted content in the past and used the traditional #acousticmusic #guitar #homestudio etc style hashtags as indicators of the type of content I’m posting, I find that the only people I get liking or commenting on my posts are other producers or musicians using the platform to attempt to do the same thing as I’m doing. For the most part, I don’t feel these people are my target demographic. I’ve watched online courses where gurus advise you to do the strategy these people are employing, trying to “engage” with people, I get the theory behind it, but in reality it feels so disingenuous and a little counter-intuitive.
