Since I first made my Snapchat in 2015, I’ve always posted really random, silly things relating to my life on my story every day. It’s definitely helped me keep up with some old friends for a long time, especially by acting as a conversation starter. Not only that, but it’s allowed me to showcase who I am at the core: my sense of humor, my ideas/opinions, etc… But, as most of us know, Instagram has really taken back its userbase, and Snapchat’s hanging on a thread. Some of my friends don’t use it much anymore. Most of the new people I meet simply share their Instagram handle so they never even get to see this side of me. I’ve been considering moving my whole act to Instagram Stories, but am not sure if the content would translate well onto the platform. Instagram is geared a lot more towards marketing oneself through extravagance and artfulness and lacks the intimacy and fuck-all attitude I felt with Snapchat. I feel like the best way to describe my connection to my Snapchat persona is as that between a Youtuber and their channel. I have a dilemma I can’t wrap my head around and want some advice. I have a personal Instagram. Let’s call it JonDoe. It goes with my personal twitter/twitch/youtube. On it, I have mixed personal content and brand content as a streamer/youtuber. It’s all growing very well, and I have over 1k on insta, growing daily, but I want to rebrand my JonDoe account to my streamer brand, lets call it SillyGamerStuff and start posting more funny / on-brand content. I figured I’d just start a second account for JonDoe’s personal stuff, for family, friends, girlfriend, etc and run with the momentum on my main account, now named SillyGamerStuff (don’t eff with momentum, right?) My only hangup, is that I would basically lose all my personal history on my JonDoe -> now SillyGamerStuff. “lose” as in, all my personal stuff from before I started this online personality, from about 2 years back, so 5 years or so of history, would be buried under all the brand content.
