So, I’m a 17 year old guy who is about to go into his senior year of high school. Unlike many of my peers, I do not have any form of social media except for Reddit. However, I have recently been considering joining social media, however, I do not know if it is a good idea. ​ I think it would be good because I am a musician and social media would really help me spread the word about my gigs; where I will be performing and when. Additionally, I have a lot of friends, and I think having social media would be good to keep in touch with them when we all leave for college in a year or so. ​ On the other hand, I know that social media can be addictive and I tend to have an addictive personality. Additionally, with the massive spread of fake and/or targeted news and the upcoming election year, I feel that this could also become an issue. ​ I’m not totally sure that this is the best sub to ask this question on, and if it is not, please direct me to a better sub if you can. But, the bottom line is: based on the little bit of info I’ve provided, should I join social media (other than Reddit obviously) and if so, which platform is best (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.)? I have a dilemma I can’t wrap my head around and want some advice. I have a personal Instagram. Let’s call it JonDoe. It goes with my personal twitter/twitch/youtube. On it, I have mixed personal content and brand content as a streamer/youtuber. It’s all growing very well, and I have over 1k on insta, growing daily, but I want to rebrand my JonDoe account to my streamer brand, lets call it SillyGamerStuff and start posting more funny / on-brand content. I figured I’d just start a second account for JonDoe’s personal stuff, for family, friends, girlfriend, etc and run with the momentum on my main account, now named SillyGamerStuff (don’t eff with momentum, right?) My only hangup, is that I would basically lose all my personal history on my JonDoe -> now SillyGamerStuff. “lose” as in, all my personal stuff from before I started this online personality, from about 2 years back, so 5 years or so of history, would be buried under all the brand content.
